Thanks to all the media outlets sharing the recent Thanks to all the media outlets sharing the recent sighting of Humpback whale #89 in the Hudson! Photos by Bjoern Kils @newyorkmediaboat & Celia Ackerman @ackermancelia featuring comments from our Humpback whale researcher @njwhalegirl in @wsj @thetimes @dailymail @ny1
On November 22nd we were on this Humpback Whale th On November 22nd we were on this Humpback Whale that was very curious of the American Princess Cruises. The AP was in neutral and was motionless always adhering to “Whale Sense” guidelines. When the Humpback Whale we were watching started watching us!
We could clearly see the whale; it was 3-4 feet under the surface, it was moving away from the boat. It twisting its body and changed direction. It was now coming right at the AP and fast! It came from the Port side to the Starboard and went directly under the Pulpit. It cleared the Pulpit and rotated upside down got a good look at everyone on the boat. The whale then flipped right-side up, in such a tight circle, and turned back. The Humpback followed the exact same line it came in on. All the while, on the same breath, again being a few feet below the surface. leaving footprints on the surface as it went. It was an awesome fly-bye experience that we rarely see, and glad we did!
Humpback Whales pectoral fins are white and black, some humpbacks have more white and some have more black on them. In the photo you see the pectoral fin as green. The sea water here in NYC, at this time is green. Therefore, looking through the green sea water at the white pectoral fin makes the white on its body green.

A whale spout isn’t actually a spray of water; it’s actually a gush of warm air that is being pushed out of the whales lungs!
